December 20 Monday
“…Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” Matthew 1:20-21
For centuries, Christians have celebrated the birth of Jesus. Some, however, now view it as a very stressful time of the year, and that we are under such stress caused by too many distractions, such as failure of our banks, loss of homes, unemployment, wars, to say nothing of the shrinking economy, which has put a damper on toys, fattened turkeys, new clothes, and perhaps other self-imposed sentences. All these distractions can put a No Vacancy Sign on our lives: no room for the only one who is the source of peace and joy. This Christmas, take down the sign and make room for Jesus. Had it not been for Joseph’s deep abiding faith in God, his knowledge that the Baby he was protecting from Herod and other vile leaders would be the Savior of our world, life as we know it would not be. Life without the promise of eternal life, is no life at all.
Dear Lord, during this Advent, let your light of peace and love shine in our world. Give us eyes to see the signs of your presence in the world. Help us to prepare our lives and our homes to receive the One who said, “I am the light of the world.” AMEN.
