December 4 Saturday
In these verses, Mary sings a song with a vision of the reign of God:
You have deposed the mighty from their thrones and raised the lowly to high places.
You have filled the hungry with good things, while you have sent the rich away empty.
The perfect world that Mary envisions is a challenge to those of us who live in the US where our military budget exceeds that of the rest of the world combined.
Many of us are drawn to Mary’s vision of hope for “poor people to be filled with good things.” We at Calvary express our yearning for that perfect world in many ways: by providing scholarships for students in El Salvador; by raising money for homeless services; by feeding hungry people, but also by working with Bread for the World to advocate for policies that will provide for more equity in the US and in our world; and we buy fair-trade products – to ensure justice for workers – a different kind of way to fill poor people with good things.
We who hope and yearn for the reign of God must be challenged by Mary’s vision.
Can we all share more – and so be partners with God in bringing closer a perfect world where the poor are filled with good things?
