On Sunday, August 30, we begin a series on wisdom literature in the Bible. What do all those proverbs mean? Why is Song of Solomon read only at weddings? Together we examine these texts and how they have shaped our ideas of wisdom tradition, and what they mean to us today.

Lunch tickets are $15 in advance (on sale in March during fellowship hour in Woodward Hall—purchase a ticket today and get a cupcake for free!) or $20 at the door; contact Jade, jkearney@calvarydc.org, or call the church office for information. We’ll learn about Horizons Club activities and we’ll hear from Calvary’s representatives who attended the Global Baptist Peace Conference in Rome. Plan now to join us!
Network!
Some members of our community of faith currently are looking for jobs, and they could use our help. If you are looking for a job or if you are a professional who has contacts, suggestions or resources to share, please join us in the Chapel on March 15 following worship to trade ideas, resumes, business cards and telephone numbers. Let’s gather together and use the power of our great community to support each other.
Lent 2009: A Defiant Life
During this season of Lent at Calvary, we examine ways in which living like Jesus means living in defiance of the structures of our world. It’s true! To follow Jesus, we must live in such a way that we act audaciously, even defiantly; a way that others might consider strange, if not offensive. During Lent, we take a good hard look at the ways in which Jesus modeled defiant living and His call to do defiant things like follow, suffer, protest, believe—even die. Please join us.
Going Green
Going Green We are now using coffee mugs during Fellowship Hour, so please return them to racks located on the right of Woodward Hall stage. Think twice before trashing it! Recycling bins are available in Woodward Hall, Shallenberger Hall and the Church Office. Please recycle clean cans, glass and plastic bottles, and plastic cups. Thank you!

Quarterly Business Meeting Report
Last Wednesday evening our congregation met for a quarterly business meeting. Our moderator, Kevin Hagan, had worked tirelessly to prepare for the meeting. When he found out he had to travel to Chicago Wednesday for a meeting, he called vice moderator, Amy Dale, just to tell her not to worry . . . he’d catch an afternoon flight back and be there in more than enough time to lead the meeting.
Well, you know what happened. Kevin got stuck in Chicago because of bad weather here, and Amy Dale’s worst nightmare came true. She had to lead the meeting.
Not only did she do a fabulous job, this meeting may be on record as one of the shortest Calvary business meetings ever–a mere 45 minutes. So, well done, Amy and welcome back, Kevin. She has set the bar high for next time!
Here are Amy’s reflections on her moderating experience:
The call I’ve dreaded came on July 23rd at 3:45pm. That was time Kevin Hagan, our moderator, should h
ave been on a plane taking off from Chicago to fly back to DC just in time to moderate our quarterly business meeting. His flight had been delayed due to bad weather on the East Coast. He didn’t know when he’d take off, but there was a strong possibility I’d have to moderate the business meeting that night.
So I did what any introvert who hates public speaking would do-I panicked. I resisted the inclination to curl up in a ball on the floor and rock back and forth. Instead I took a deep breath and told myself “Everything will be fine. No one will really look at me or hear anything I say, especially if I put on my invisibility cloak and don’t stand anywhere near the microphone.” That gave me the inner strength to walk into the meeting with confidence.
At the meeting there was pushing, unwillingness to share, and a general feeling of being unable to make a decision. But that was just when people were going through the line to get ice cream. I was thankful there were still M&Ms and walnuts left when I got through the line. Protein and a sugar buzz help me get through a possibly long and potentially boring meeting. No offense, but let’s be serious. The last business meeting was a marathon, and no one wanted that this time around.
In preparation for the meeting, Council decided Pastor Amy would give a consolidated Pastoral and Staff report and I would give a consolidated Boards and Committees report. Also helping to keep the meeting short was the fact that the only Old and New Business we had were a few membership actions. Easy-peasy. With me stepping in at the last minute to moderate, Claudia Moore agreed to give the report I would have given if Kevin weren’t trapped in Chicago.
So up I go to the microphone, hoping no one would see or hear me. Everything went quickly and smoothly. Pastor Amy showed a computer presentation (like she did during the April business meeting) highlighting the signs of resurrection here at Calvary. It was inspiring! For those of you who missed it, I hope you get the chance to see it sometime soon. There was a sad moment when Mary Andreolli gave her official resignation to the congregation. Pastor Amy and I said a few words of thanks to her and presented her with a letter of appreciation. Hugs were given but tears were held back. Thanks again, Mary, for all your service and hard work these last few years. We at Calvary are all thankful.
The meeting lasted 45 minutes, a record time for Calvary. If you blinked, you would’ve missed it – like Victor Tupitza, who wasn’t even ready to give the benediction when the time came!
Peace and blessings to all,
Amy Dale
Vice Moderator
