Calvary’s annual summer camp, Camp Fraser is underway and the kids are having lots of fun! Swimming, hiking and sleeping in the cabins were some of the highlights I was told when I headed out there Wednesday afternoon…

Calvary attended the annual Capital Pride Street Festival and packed a booth. Shouts of “we’re a different kind of Baptist” were met with interested glances and conversations on Pennsylvania Avenue. Special thanks to Mike Overby and Courtney Rice for making our booth happen this year!

We had much to celebrate on June 7 in worship. We celebrated with Anabel, Luis and Wilson in their baptisms. We welcomed four new members and we blessed the Butlers as Pastor Amy heads out for sabbatical this summer. Below are a few pictures. What a beautiful worship service to begin our summer!

In the last week, we learned more about what it means to be Baptist (with Rosalie Beck, Stan Hastey, Brent Walker and Jeff Haggary), welcomed the Beyond Borders team and Tony Campolo to Calvary, worked hard out at Camp Fraser for a workday, celebrated our 147th Anniversary with a hymn sing and luncheon. What a week! Below are pictures (hopefully in chronological order!) of all of our special events:

Harold Ritchie invited us to his “summer home” in Bushwood, Maryland for the Church Council Picnic and Staff Appreciation Luncheon. Allyson Wisdom was in town and it was great to spend time with her too. We had a delicious lunch (too much food!) and even spotted Patrick the peacock!

A Different Kind of Baptist Revival!
6:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the Chapel
Sunday, May 31: Telling Our Story: Baptist History
Monday, June 1: Living Our Convictions: What Baptists Believe
Tuesday, June 2: Hoping for the Future: Being a Different Kind of Baptist
(Stan Hastey, Jeff Haggray and Brent Walker will be the panelists for Tuesday night’s meeting.)
Rosalie Beck, who will lead and facilitate the conversations each night, was born into a Southern Baptist family in the city of Amarillo, Texas, on January 28, 1949.
After earning a B.A. in biology at the University of California at San Diego, Beck moved to Houston to work as a biochemist at the University of Texas Medical School in the Department of Biochemistry. For two years she enjoyed this scientific effort, but came to believe there was more she needed to do in the world than run experiments. In 1973, she entered a short-term missionary program of the Southern Baptist Convention. Beck served as a youth worker in Asia, and for two years she taught and ministered among the young people. She returned to America in 1975 where she worked with Southeast Asian refugees at the Southern Baptist Convention’s resettlement office in Fort Smith, Arkansas.
In January 1976, Beck entered Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, to work on a Master of Divinity degree. She majored in church history and received the first Robert A. Baker Church History Award for the outstanding student in that field. After graduation, Beck moved to Waco, Texas, to pursue a Ph.D. in religion at Baylor University. She received a graduate assistantship and then a teaching assistantship. Beck completed her degree in August 1984 and was asked to join the Baylor faculty beginning that fall. She was the first woman professor in the Baylor Department of Religion, now holds the rank of Associate Professor at the university, and is a member of the Graduate Faculty.
